adobe captivate microlearning: how to change a cabin air filter

This step-by-step process micro-learning teaches you how to save money by replacing your vehicle’s cabin air filter. Experience a confidence boost and save money as you learn new, practical skills!

Overview

It’s no secret that the rising cost of living in the U.S. is adding stress and strain to many households. Many individuals in 2023 are searching for ways to save money. Often, people view car repairs as daunting, but they provide a savings opportunity and a chance to learn new skills. This short Captivate module teaches individuals with limited vehicle repair experience how to save approximately $100 by changing their vehicle’s cabin air filter at home.

This training is mobile responsive so learners can keep their phone or tablet with them throughout the replacement process. Pictures provide visual context, and the material is chunked into sections to provide a step-by-step process and reduce cognitive load.

  • Responsibilities: Instructional Designer, eLearning Developer

  • Target Audience: Vehicle owners

  • Tools Used: Adobe Captivate, Canva, Shutterstock

  • Year: 2023

  • KPI: Vehicle owners will save approximately $100 dollars per installation by mastering a practical vehicle maintenance skill.

I worked with a SME to develop this training. We had to strike a balance with the level of detail contained in the module, since I wanted the training to be accessible and practical for all types of vehicles. I created the content around the general process so that more people would benefit from the training.

I used Adobe Captivate to rapidly develop the training. I designed the training with a beginner in mind. The end of every section includes important reminders that cover additional considerations or offer reassurance.

process

I followed the ADDIE model for this design process. First, I identified the need for this project through news coverage of the rising cost of living and inflation. Additionally, informal conversations with individuals confirmed that many are seeking solutions for reducing expenses and meeting monthly budgeting and savings goals.

I created the KPI after a discussion with the SME to determine the savings possible from this project.

Once I established the KPI, I discussed with the SME what people need to be able to do to successfully replace their cabin air filter. I created a project outline based on this information.

Initial Design + Prototype

I rapidly designed the initial project prototype in Captivate. Throughout this process, I focused on a minimalistic design; the learner in my target audience has no (or minimal) experience performing maintenance tasks on their vehicle. I created clearly organized sections with sequential information. I intentionally made this module without many details so the learner would not be overwhelmed. I also avoided using mechanic jargon so the content is accessible to the learner’s level of knowledge and skill.

Feedback + Modifications

Once I finished the initial project prototype in Captivate, I conducted a review meeting with the SME. They approved the prototype, so I gathered feedback from a potential learner. I changed the design of the process timeline at the beginning of the project since it was confusing how to progress to the next slide. I am currently seeking feedback from an additional SME before finalizing the project.
